‘Silence Would Be Treason’: Ken Saro-Wiwa’s Letters

Illuminations is delighted to host ‘Silence Would Be Treason’, an exhibition centred around the correspondence between Ken Saro-Wiwa and Sr Majella McCarron, which is now held in NUI Maynooth’s Library.

Nigerian author and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, facing execution by the military regime on trumped-up charges, corresponded extensively with Irish nun and solidarity worker Majella McCarron during the last 18 months of his life. The letters on view here are the last writings of a man on trial for his life, smuggled out of military detention in a bread basket.

Exhibition curated by Dr Íde Corley and staff of the NUI Maynooth Library.
